On the Road to Emmaus

Two Disciples walk and dine with the resurrected Lord as recorded in Luke 24:13-35. What can we learn from this account?

What were these disciples doing at the time they encountered Jesus?
The disciples were discussing and pondering the events of and leading up to the Savior's crucifixion. This is why the Lord "drew near and went with them." As we talk of and ponder about the Savior, we invite him to draw near to us as well.

How did Jesus teach them?
First, he has asked a good open-ended question that allowed the disciples to share what they knew. Then, he met them where they were and expounded the scriptures unto them. He taught the prophesies of the prophets concerning His resurrection and helped them to understand. Our own teaching should be patterned after the Savior; teach people not lessons by starting where they are.

How did the disciples respond to His teachings?
As Jesus was about to depart, "they constrained him, saying, abide with us." They sought for Him to be with them. Do we seek for the Savior to stay with us? Do we make every effort to keep Him with us?

How did they feel when with the Savior?
The scripture describes it best: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" This burning of their heart is a manifestation of the Holy Ghost, which testifies of truth and testifies of Christ, who is truth. The Holy Ghost can be manifested in many ways, but it is commonly described as a burning within. When we study the scriptures or have spiritual experiences, the Holy Ghost testifies to us of truth, and we feel it inside.

What were they doing when the Savior revealed Himself to them?
Their eyes were opened, and they realized it was the Savior when he "took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them." Similarly, the Savior will reveal Himself to us as we worthily partake of the sacrament each week. We'll feel his love and know that he is there.

What did they do after learning it was the Savior?
The disciples "rose up that same hour, and returned to Jerusalem" to tell the other disciples and the Apostles that they had seen the resurrected Lord. They had gained a testimony and needed to share it with others. As we are converted to the Lord, we also have a desire to share our testimony with others and to help them become converted.

Ponderize: Charity and Virtue - D&C 121:45

In D&C 121, we read these inspired words penned by the Prophet, Joseph Smith:

45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
 46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion...

I chose to memorize this passage because of the strength it gives me in multiple important areas.

Charity
First and foremost we must have charity, which is a gift from God, and one that we must diligently seek to obtain (see Moroni 7:44-48). This verse reminds me to seek for charity, to look at all of God's children from a viewpoint of love, and if possible to see them as He does.

Virtue
To be virtuous is to do the right thing when no one is looking, and this can be no truer than in our own thoughts. Only God knows our thoughts, so having virtuous thoughts becomes one of the true tests of life. The goal is to have pure, virtuous, positive thoughts unceasingly, which seems an impossible task but one for which this verse strengthens me.

Confidence
There is a real power that comes into our lives when we know that God is pleased with our efforts. The peace that comes from knowing our lives are in alignment with God's will is inexplicable and something all people seek. This verse teaches how we can achieve this. I've experienced this at times in my life, and this verse helps me focus on areas of my life that can help me have this confidence and peace more frequently.

Priesthood
How beautiful and poetic is this phrase: "and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy souls as the dews from heaven." This is another benefit of living with charity and virtue - an understanding of the Priesthood. I don't think I've arrived in this regard as there is so much more for me to know and learn, but as this verse suggests, it is a gradual process that takes time. This understanding "distils" upon our souls. For those who may not think this promise is a big deal, realize that the Priesthood is God's power through which the earth, the universe and even all of the workmanship of God's hands were created.

Holy Ghost
The companionship of the Holy Ghost is another powerful and very real blessing that can be ours if we can live with charity and virtue. His guidance can help us in all aspects of our lives, not just the spiritual, as He opens our minds and increases our ability to learn and remember. The Holy Ghost brings us comfort and peace. He can "show [us] all things what [we] should do." (2 Ne 32:5).

As Elder Richard G Scott suggested a few years ago, this passage of scripture has become a dear friend. It is one that I can recall at any time to refocus on what really matters.

Why Pray Always?

In the scriptures, especially in the Doctrine & Covenants, the term "pray always" is used repeatedly. In this post I will explore the different ways that he exhortation to "pray always" is used in throughout these scriptures.

Why should we pray always?

To Overcome Temptation of the Adversary

• Ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him (3 Nephi 18:15).
• Ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father (3 Nephi 18:18-19).
• Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work (D&C 10:5).
• Let the church take heed and pray always, lest they fall into temptation (D&C 20:33).
• Pray always, lest you enter into temptation and lose your reward (D&C 31:12).
• Pray always that you enter not into temptation, that you may abide the day of his coming, whether in life or in death (D&C 61:39).
• Pray always lest that wicked one have power in you, and remove you out of your place (D&C 93:49).

It seems clear that praying always helps us to fight off temptation. And when we fall into temptation, we become subject to the devil who gains power over us.

To Obtain the Spirit, Knowledge, and Many Blessings

• Ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul (2 Nephi 32:9).
• Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing (D&C 19:38).
• They shall pray always that I may unfold the same [the gospel] to their understanding (D&C 32:4).

In addition to helping us withstand temptation, praying always has many other benefits including better performance in every aspect of our lives, better understanding of the gospel (and presumably other subjects), and the constant companionship of the Spirit which is a blessing that leads to many other blessings.

To Be Prepared for the Second Coming

• Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man (Luke 21:36).
• Pray always that you enter not into temptation, that you may abide the day of his coming, whether in life or in death (D&C 61:39).
• Pray always, that ye may not faint, until I come. Behold, and lo, I will come quickly, and receive you unto myself (D&C 88:126).

Finally, praying always is necessary for us to be watchful and prepared for the Second Coming. We'll be able to overcome the challenges that would distract us, avoid temptation, and not lose heart during the tough, last days.

Mosiah 3:19 - How to Overcome the Natural Man

One of my favorite scriptures is from King Benjamin's address in Mosiah 3:19 where he teaches:

"For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."

This is a powerful lesson in how to overcome the desires of the flesh and work towards perfection. He breaks it down into three things we must do:

(1) Yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit

After baptism, we are confirmed and given the Gift of the Holy Ghost. This gift entitles us to the constant companionship of the Spirit as long as we remain worthy, for the Spirit cannot dwell in an unholy tabernacle. The Spirit warns us of danger and is influential in showing us a way to escape temptation because the Lord always prepares a way for our escape (see 1 Cor 10:13) so that we are able to use our agency in overcoming the temptation. We must listen to the still small voice.

(2) Put off the natural man, becoming a saint through the Atonement

To me "putting off" the natural man is about commitment. We must commit to ourselves and to God that we are going to do better, think better, speak better and be better. But it is not usually possible to just "put off" the natural man with one firm commitment because we're human and we slip up from time to time. This is why the Atonement of Jesus Christ is an essential element in overcoming the flesh. As often as we sincerely repent, the Lord will forgive us. This step is really a continuous cycle of commitment, effort, falling short, repenting and being forgiven through the Atonement. The goal should be to do a little better each time - we must constantly be improving and progressing, but perfection is not expected of us the first time.

(3) Become as a child

We must develop childlike attributes such as those listed by King Benjamin: "submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father." These attributes lead to us being able to see the big picture of God's will and accept his will. They also lead us to become more like our Savior, full of charity - a pure love - for everyone around us. As we are filled with charity, we cannot help but want to serve our fellowman, and in this service there is no place for selfishness and the natural man, for they have been pushed out of our lives and replaced with an attitude of service.

The Holy Ghost: An Unspeakable Gift from God

Elder Christensen states:

The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead, and, as such, likeGod the Father and Jesus Christ, He knows our thoughts and the intents of our hearts.³ The Holy Ghost loves us and wants us to be happy. Since He knows the challenges we will face, He can guide us and teach us all things we must do to return and live with our Heavenly Father once again.⁴

Through the gift of the Holy Ghost, we receive added capacity and spiritual gifts, increased revelation and protection, steady guidance and direction, and the promised blessings of sanctification and exaltation in the celestial kingdom. All of these blessings are given as a result of our personal desire to receive them and come as we align our lives with the will of God and seek His constant direction.

How incredible that we can have a member of the Godhead with us to give us divine guidance and teaching throughout our life?! There are not many gifts that compare with this one given to us from our loving Heavenly Father. With this guidance we will not fail. The key is to seek out the Holy Ghost and retain him with us at all times. 

The Holy Ghost's entire mission is to help us return and live with our Heavenly Father once again. Elder Christensen teaches:

The Holy Ghost works in perfect unity with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, fulfilling many important roles and distinct responsibilities. The primary purpose of the Holy Ghost is to bear witness of God the Father and of His Son, Jesus Christ,⁷ and to teach us the truth of all things.⁸ A sure witness from the Holy Ghost carries far more certainty than a witness from any other source.

Elder Christensen explains how the Holy Ghost speaks to us:

We all have experiences with the Holy Ghost, even though we may not always recognize them. As inspired thoughts come into our minds, we know them to be true by the spiritual feelings that enter into our hearts. President Boyd K. Packer has taught: “The Holy Ghost speaks with a voice that you feel more than you hear. … While we speak of ‘listening’ to the whisperings of the Spirit, most often one describes a spiritual prompting by saying, ‘I had a feeling … ’.”¹⁸ It is through these sacred feelings from the Holy Ghost that we come to know what God would have us do, for this, as stated in scripture, “is the spirit of revelation.”¹⁹

God Gives Us the Holy Ghost - Why?

In 3 Nephi 28:11, Jesus teaches: "And the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and the Father giveth the Holy Ghost unto the children of men, because of me. "

The Spirit testifies of the Father so that we might know Him, our relationship to Him, and his love for us. That is one of the primary purposes of the Holy Ghost.

God gives the Holy Ghost to us because of Christ. The simple way to look at this is that we would have no real need for the Holy Ghost if not for Christ. If fallen man had no hope of redemption then why send him help? But we do have hope of redemption through Jesus Christ; and for this reason, God has given us the Holy Ghost to help us recognize Christ's teachings, believe in Him as our Savior, and follow Him on the straight and narrow path that leads to eternal life.

Guided by the Holy Spirit

I just wanted to jot down a few thoughts about President Boyd K Packer's (one of the 12 Apostles) talk "Guided by the Holy Spirit" - for the full text of his message click here.

President Packer hit the nail on the head when he said, "Some claim we are not Christians. They either do not know us at all or they misunderstand." The name of our church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and everything we do centers around the Savior, Jesus Christ, so to claim that Mormons aren't Christian is as absurd as the belief that Mormons have horns.

He continues: "In the Church every ordinance is done by the authority of and in the name of Jesus Christ. We have the same organization as did the primitive Church, with apostles and prophets." This is critical to understand- Jesus Christ established his Church while on the earth 2000 years ago with apostles and prophets. That Church eventually fell into apostasy after the Apostles were martyred. The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored in these, the last days via a new prophet of our time, Joseph Smith. This is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"Every one of us can be guided by the spirit of revelation and the gift of the Holy Ghost...If you are carrying some burden, forget it, let it alone. Do a lot of forgiving and a little repenting " President Packer teaches that we all can be guided by the Spirit to make changes in our lives. A little pondering and reflexion will quickly bring to our minds areas for improvement in our lives. Forgive, repent, forget. The Spirit will guide you to know how to change to become more perfect like the Savior of the World.

Don't Spurn Revelation

From 3 Nephi 29:5-6:

5Wo unto him that spurneth at the doings of the Lord; yea, wo unto him that shall deny the Christ and his works! 

6Yea, wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by gifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost!

To spurn means to reject or scorn. If you spurn the Savior of the world, you better be prepared for the consequences. This part jumped out at me: "wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation..." Sadly, there are so many people, even Christians, who spurn the Lord because they deny that he still speaks today through revelation and through his mouthpieces, the prophets.

We can pray to God and have our prayers answered to us. Are not those answers revelations? If I pray for God to help me understand something difficult and my mind is enlightened to be able to comprehend it, is that not revelation? Inspiration? Doesn't that suggest that God does still speak to us?

Whenever God's truths have been on the earth, God has had prophets on the earth. Through these prophets he reveals his will and the prophets preach and write it down. That's how the Bible came to be. Since this has been God's pattern since the beginning of time, why do people now, even Christians, claim that God has changed and no longer speaks his truth through prophets? Do we no longer need God? Has he forgotten us? Abandoned us? NO! God loves us. He wants to help us in our lives. He still communicates with us through revelation, and he still communicates with us through his holy prophets!

Revelation is real. Prophecy is real. Gifts of the Spirit are real, including the gifts of tongues and healings. The power of the Holy Ghost is real. WO be unto those who deny the Lord and these realities. I know that they are true, and they are meant for us.

Receive the Holy Ghost by Elder David A Bednar of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles

Elder Bednar wrote:

The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed only after proper and authorized baptism and by the laying on of hands by those holding the Melchizedek Priesthood. The Lord declared:

“Yea, repent and be baptized, every one of you, for a remission of your sins; yea, be baptized even by water, and then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost. …

“And whoso having faith you shall confirm in my church, by the laying on of the hands, and I will bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost upon them” (D&C 33:11, 15).

The Apostle Paul made this practice clear to the Ephesians when he asked:

“Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

“And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

“Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them” (Acts 19:2–6).

I really like the truths taught by the experience shared by the Apostle Paul. Clearly John the Baptist had authority from God to baptize. We know he possessed the Aaronic priesthood. But even John himself taught that someone great was to come, someone who could bestow the Gift of the Holy Ghost, or baptism of fire. He was referring to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. In this scripture, Paul is speaking to some good people who were baptized by paul but had not yet received the Holy Ghost nor been baptized into Christ's church. So, even though they had been previously baptized unto repentance by John, they required a second baptism by Paul, who possessed the Melchezedic Priesthood, in order to join the Church of Jesus Christ and to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

I could never do Elder Bednar's talk justice with this blog post, so please read it. Here is the thesis for the remainder of his talk and he then proceeds to explain each step in detail: 

"What should we do to make this authorized admonition to seek for the companionship of the third member of the Godhead an ongoing reality? Let me suggest that we need to (1) sincerely desire to receive the Holy Ghost, (2) appropriately invite the Holy Ghost into our lives, and (3) faithfully obey God’s commandments."

Personal Revelation

From studying "Chapter 4: Recognize the Spirit" in Preach My Gospel.


Joseph Smith taught: "This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted--by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed" (History of the Church 5:135). I had to reread that a couple of times to fully understand what he was saying- let me explain by paraphrasing this quote: "This is how things are done in heaven--specific revelation is given to us based on our unique situations in life." This teaches that God is both aware of our unique circumstances and also loves us and cares about us enough to provide us with guidance to overcome our trials and our problems. This is the essence of personal revelation.

NOTE: After you are baptized and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, you are entitled to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost in your life as you keep God's commandments. The Holy Ghost, which you may have with you at all times according to your righteousness, is the very medium through which God bestows upon us personal revelation. In that sense, personal revelation is very conditional on personal righteousness.

Salvation and the Fourth Article of Faith

The fourth Article of Faith states:

"We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Articles of Faith 1:4

This statement teaches us some basic things about salvation and how it is achieved. There are many people in the world that believe that God has preselected a group of people on this earth to receive salvation and that the rest of us are out of luck unless we are part of that group. What a false, sad doctrine that is! God loves us as our Father and wants ALL of us to return to him. However, he will not force us to be obedient to his commandments and live in such a way that will qualify us for the blessing of returning to him because he has given us agency to choose for ourselves.

God has given us his gospel with steps that we should follow to prove ourselves to him and qualify for his greatest gift, that of eternal life. The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are the first steps in following the path that God has prepared for us to return to him. Not only are they inspired of God, but they also make sense logically.

Faith
First we must have faith in him. We must believe and more importantly do. Faith is an action word that implies that we will not only believe but do as the Lord wants us to.

Repentance
As we begin to have faith in God and in his son, Jesus Christ, we will naturally change to be better. We will want to make changes to leave our old lives behind and start fresh. We will ask God for his forgiveness and as we do this, repenting, he will forgive us.

Baptism
We show our repentance and change of heart through the ordinance of baptism. When we are baptized, we promise to follow Jesus Christ and his teachings. We come out of the baptismal waters clean just as we were when we were born. Baptism opens the door to salvation but does not guarantee salvation.

The Gift of the Holy Ghost
There is a second part of baptism. After we are baptized with water, we must be baptized with fire, or the Holy Ghost. This ordinance is performed soon after baptism. The gift of the Holy Ghost is given by the laying on of hands by someone who has the priesthood authority. It is important to note that the Gift of the Holy Ghost does not just come upon baptized members of the Church automatically. It must be given by the laying on of hands as recorded in the New Testament in Acts 8:16-18.

Of course following these steps, the first principles and ordinances of the gospel will not guarantee salvation, but as I mentioned, these are the first steps that we must take. After we have completed these steps, we have begun on the path that will lead us to eternal life if we press on, enduring to the end. One of my favorite scriptures that talks about this responsibility is found in 2 Nephi 31:20, which reads:

"Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life."
